Rene “The Challenger” Catalan is a man who is always trying to improve.
The ONE Strawweight World Title contender celebrated his 41st birthday on 12 December. But instead of celebrating it in style, he dedicated that day to honing the skills of future martial artists in the Philippines.
Catalan held the Philippine Encuentro Championships last Saturday, 14 December, which gives young upstarts an avenue to compete and learn from some of the best athletes from Catalan Fighting System.
Considering he just competed last month at ONE: MASTERS OF FATE before representing the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games, there is no question that Catalan is dedicated to his country.
“It has always been my goal to bring honor to the Philippines and I hope to do that through sports,” Catalan said.
“This is a way for me to help out our youth and to prepare them for future international competitions, be it in mixed martial arts or for the national team.”
Bringing glory to the country is nothing new for Catalan as he has won gold medals in both the SEA Games and the Asian Games in the past in wushu.
This year he won the silver, and although most people would be content with that, coming in second place only encourages “The Challenger” to grow.
“This only motivates me to do more and be better moving forward,” Catalan said.
“I am excited for my return to ONE Championship and I will only keep getting better and better moving forward.”
In the meantime, The Home Of Martial Arts returns to action on 10 January for ONE: A NEW TOMORROW at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
