Folayang, a three-time ONE Lightweight World Champion, thinks a lot of big names would welcome Northcutt's arrival in their territory.
“The division is so stacked and there are a lot of people waiting for him,” the Team Lakay superstar said.
“This is another challenge in the lightweight division, and this would certainly be a challenge for him as well.”
The 23-year-old multi-time Karate World Champion from the United States made his ONE Championship debut at ONE: ENTER THE DRAGON last May, but it went differently from what Northcutt imagined.
Northcutt suffered a crushing 29-second knockout loss at the hands of Cosmo "Good Boy" Alexandre, a defeat so devastating that he had to undergo surgery after the match.
For Folayang, that loss does not define Northcutt and he is excited to see what “Super” is truly capable of.
“That fight did not show the full potential of Sage when he last fought. Maybe his move to the lightweight division will help, as he will be big for the division,” Folayang said.
“I’d like to see his first match at lightweight first and then from there, maybe we can assess his skills and how he fares in the lightweight division.”
“Hopefully, he has an ace up his sleeve in his move to lightweight.”
As expected, “Landslide” is one of those athletes waiting for the highly-touted Northcutt in his move to the division.
“We cannot undermine the possibility of Folayang versus Northcutt. As time passes, I know the world will become smaller for the two of us, so it’s always a nice possibility,” he said.
“This is a fight I’m interested in.”
“While that would be a good match, of course my entire focus is on my match on 31 January.”
It remains to be seen if a showdown between Folayang and Northcutt could ever come to fruition. For now, the Baguio City native has to pass the tough test that awaits him in Manila.
In the meantime, ONE Championship returns to martial arts action this Friday, 10 January, for ONE: A NEW TOMORROW at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
