Team Lakay would have to start from scratch in devising a game plan for Eduard "Landslide" Folayang's next appearance inside the Circle.
The former ONE Lightweight World Champion from Baguio City was originally scheduled against Ahmed "Wolverine" Mujtaba, but the latter was replaced by Dutch striker Pieter "The Archangel" Buist two weeks before the bout.
Folayang and Buist will now lock horns in the co-main event of ONE: FIRE & FURY on 31 January at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
And for Folayang, it is something that he has to adjust to quickly.
“It’s a reset. This will test how good we truly are in adjusting, how flexible we are. I have an advantage when it comes to preparation time but I know we’re all professionals, so I know he’s training even without a scheduled bout,” Folayang shared.
“Of course, there would be major adjustments because he’s a striker and he will have a reach advantage, so now it’s all a matter of finding areas where he’s weak,” he added.
“That will be crucial, finding his weakness and exploiting it. That will be the key to a victory here.”
Buist has registered back-to-back wins since joining The Home of Martial Arts. In his first bout under the ONE Championship banner, Buist won via second-round technical knockout against Kota "Kong "Shimoishi at ONE: WARRIORS OF LIGHT in May 2019.
Folayang does not need any warning to know how dangerous Buist is.
“He has a great record, his wins are well balanced from submissions, TKO and decisions. He’s a good striker and he knows how to use his knees and reach to his advantage,” Folayang shared.
Pressed for time to come up with a brand new strategy against the red-hot Dutchman, Folayang would not allow that minor roadblock to get in his way back to the top of the loaded ONE Lightweight division.
"This is a big lesson for me. You have to expect a lot from every opponent you’re facing. I know this would not be a walk in the park and anything could happen,” Folayang stated.
"As much as possible you have to be ready for everyone because everyone’s out for you. So now it’s all about preparing for everything and making sure that things fall into place.”
Folayang and Buist will leave it all on the line at ONE: FIRE & FURY on 31 January at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
