ONE Championship will finally be returning to action at the end of July, and top women's atomweight contender Denice "The Menace Fairtex" Zamboanga is looking to get back inside the circle as well.
Following a five-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ONE announced that they'll be opening the circle once again for ONE: NO SURRENDER, scheduled for July 31st in Bangkok, Thailand.
This will be ONE's first live event since their KING OF THE JUNGLE card back in February 28th in Singapore.
With the event being in Bangkok, Zamboanga, who's currently based at the Fairtex Training Center in Pattaya, is hoping to be on the card.
The 23-year old Filipina is next in line for a shot at reigning ONE Women's Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee after posting impressive back-to-back wins in her first two ONE outings, but with travel restrictions, it might be a while before that title bout comes to fruition.
Zamboanga isn't planning on just sitting and waiting.
“Obviously the travel situation is very hard right now, with so many restrictions in different countries. I understand it has been difficult to nail the logistics. But if Angela [Lee] can’t come out to play yet, then I want to stay sharp and compete,” Zamboanga told ONE Championship. “I would love to be on the Bangkok card, if possible.”
When the COVID-19 pandemic exploded and countries began to go on lockdown, Zamboanga, along with brother URCC champion Drex had no choice but to stay in Thailand. It may have been a blessing in disguise, as she' was able to remain sharp even throughout the quarantine period.
“You know I’ve been training here in Thailand for quite some time now, during this whole lockdown period. I started just training with my brother during quarantine, and it’s been great,” said Zamboanga.
“I’m lucky I have the full support of my family, and that I’m surrounded by people I can trust. I’m just working hard everyday, and I can’t wait to get back in the Circle and compete. It’s what I love to do," she added.
ONE: NO SURRENDER will feature a trio of exciting striking-only bouts, with Rodtang "The Iron Man" Jitmuangnon defending his ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Championship against rival Petchdam "The Baby Shark" Petchyindee Academy, while Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy puts his ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Championship on the line against the legendary Yodsanklai "The Boxing Computer" IWE Fairtex.
Plus, ONE newcomers "The Killer Kid" Sittichai Sitsongpeenong and Superbon are set to face off in a kickboxing superfight.
