Taking on the Magnolia Hotshots in the 2018 Commissioner's Cup, Matthew Wright scored the go-ahead triple with 3.2 seconds to go, allowing his Fuel Masters to escape with a pulsating 89-87 win.
Earlier in the day, LeBron James' thrilling game winner at home over Toronto put the Cleveland Cavaliers up 3-0 in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
It was the latest of heartbreaks suffered by the Raptors against the King.
Halfway across the world, Phoenix guard Matthew Wright was pretty pissed about yet another LeBronto moment, the Fil-Canadian gunner is obviously rooting for his hometown Raptors.
So later in the day in the PBA, against the team that he hasn't beaten since he got into the league, Wright tapped into Mamba Mentality to make sure that at least the rest of his Sunday would be better in terms of basketball results.
Taking on the Magnolia Hotshots in the 2018 Commissioner's Cup, Wright scored the go-ahead triple with 3.2 seconds to go, allowing his Fuel Masters to escape with a pulsating 89-87 win.
"Well LeBron James hit a game winner on my team today, so I was mad about that this morning," Wright said about his stepback winner.
"When we were down two points, I just tried to channel my inner Mamba. I practice that shot, I practice with coach, we don't just shoot open shots, we shoot contested shots. I shoot about 100 contested shots in practice. When it comes to game situations, I rarely get open shots so I gotta change my approach so I can be prepared for moments like these," he added.
However, despite his confidence in taking that final shot for Phoenix, Wright was pretty relieved it actually went in.
The Fuel Masters were getting smashed by the Hotshots earlier in the game, trailing by as many as 16 points before rallying in the fourth, setting up the close finish.
And when the opporunity presented itself, Wright made sure he took it.
"There was an option for a quick two but once I got the ball I made my mind up that I wasn't gonna pass," he said.
"I'm relieved because we played a pretty poor game. We took advantage of the fact that for Magnolia, this was their first game. We pressured them and they made some uncharacteristic turnovers for a veteran team," Wright added.
