Raymond Almazan and Rain or Shine were dealt their first defeat by erstwhile cellar-dwelling Columbian
After ringing off convincing victories versus Alaska, Ginebra, and NLEX, Rain or Shine has suffered its first setback in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
And the team that dealt the Elasto Painters their first defeat? Columbian, a team that is just starting to get going once again after registering a 1-21 record in nearly a year.
Rain or Shine big man Raymond Almazan was quick to admit that they looked like they were being overconfident heading into the game. “We got out (ngayong laro) na sobrang flat tsaka binigyan namin sila masyado ng kumpiyansa. Siguro yung reason ba’t kami natalo is masyado kaming nag-relax,” he told reporters after their 96-104 loss on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
He then continued, “Kasi pag ganitong mga game, kaya ayokong magsalita na 3-0 (kami) tapos Columbian lang kalaban (namin). Hindi dapat ganun e. Lahat sa PBA, alam naman natin na malakas.”
Indeed, it was the upstart Dyip who claimed control right from tip-off and then had all the answers until the final buzzer.
It wasn’t the first time Columbian had Rain or Shine’s number either as the former also upset the latter, 98-94, last conference.
Dyip head coach Ricky Dandan made it clear that isn’t the case, though. “I never really gave that much thought. Our focus was always finding ways to bounce back,” he said.
For the E-Painters, Almazan also said that they weren’t thinking about that upset loss. “Yun, nasa utak na lang siguro yun. Kapag iniisip mo kasing natalo ka ng team na ‘to, mahirap yun,” he said.
He then continued, “Kailangang malampasan mo yung ganun.”
Now, the 6-foot-8 center and his teammates go back to the drawing board as they try for a mighty rebound up against defending champion San Miguel on Sunday. “Ngayon, gusto na naming kalimutan yung ganyan. Titignan namin sa practice kung ano yung dapat i-improve namin para makabalik,” he remarked.
