“Definitely makikita niyo kung anong worth niya.” - San Miguel head coach Leo Austria on Christian Standhardinger
Much of the hype surrounding defending champion San Miguel’s conference-opening matchup against Meralco was the highly-anticipated debut of their number one draft pick Christian Standhardinger.
After strutting his stuff with Gilas and in the ABL, Pinoy hoop fans were excited to see the Fil-German big man go against the best in the PBA.
Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena, all eyes were on San Miguel’s prized pick.
Standhardinger checked in at the 3:14 mark of the first quarter, and made his first PBA basket a little over a minute later.
In his first time to suit up for the Beermen, Standhardinger logged in a little under 20 minutes of action and finished with just four points and five rebounds, two steals, and five fouls in a 93-85 loss to Meralco.
It was a rather disappointing debut for the highly-touted Standhardinger, who put up averages of 22.5 points and 11.8 boards during his 22-game season with the Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions in the ABL.
In spite of the sub-par first outing, San Miguel head coach Leo Austria still had praise for his new big man.
“Makikita naman yung energy niya eh, he’s a big help to the team, might happen that this is his first game so, on his part, he’s also trying to adjust eh,” said Austria. “Nasa adjustment period siya eh,”
Understandable, considering that the PBA and the ABL are two different environments, and as Austria said during the post-match interview, the defending champions had barely two weeks to prepare for the Commissioner’s Cup.
With possible first-game jitters and the adjustment period hopefully out of the way, Coach Leo is confident that the Standhardinger will show just why he was taken as the top pick in the last PBA draft.
“He’s trying to figure out what is good para sa team namin, what kind of help he has to provide,”
“Definitely makikita niyo kung anong worth niya.” Austria added.
