“I guess we have to seriously think about making changes, I’m not saying we’re doing it a hundred percent but realistically you have to think about it seriously.” - Yeng Guiao
With just one win in their five games so far in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, there hasn’t been a lot to celebrate for the NLEX Road Warriors.
After making the semifinals in the previous 2018 Philippine Cup, the Road Warriors are now in tenth place and are in serious danger of missing out on the post-season, and after absorbing their fourth loss, a 116-94 drubbing courtesy of Globalport, NLEX Head Coach Yeng Guiao believes that it’s time for some changes.
“I guess we have to seriously think about making changes,” Guiao said, post-game. “I’m not saying we’re doing it a hundred percent but realistically you have to think about it seriously.”
Guiao then went on to pinpoint import Arnett Moultrie, who finished with 19 points an ten rebounds.
“It’s just a pity Arnett played a really great game in our last game which we won, 37 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists, but it wasn’t even close to those numbers this game.”
While Guiao did say that the rest of the team should also be held accountable for their poor start, it was interesting, to say the least, that the decorated mentor highlighted Moultrie’s numbers.
In four games with NLEX, Moultrie - a two-year NBA veteran with the Philadelphia 76ers - is averaging up 28.7 points, 17 rebounds, and over five assists per game.
Could NLEX be looking at replacing Moultrie?
“Changes could mean changes in the lineup and I'm not saying it's just the import we're looking at, there could be some changes in the local lineup also so when things like this happen, you have to shake it up a little bit and continue going through the process.” Guiao clarified.
Coming off from the monster 37-17 point game in the win against Phoenix, Guiao added that he felt Moultrie lost a bit of the fire he had in the previous game.
“There was something lacking, there was really something lacking, it's just the passion and desire and the emotion siguro and some leadership. We were talking about that with the assistant coaches and nobody can answer what happened. Why from the last game to this game, bakit ganoon? Biglang parang na-low batt, na-low energy.”
“I think Arnett's very talented. I think he has the right skills set as I said to play for us and with us in our system. But kailangan, he has to have the desire within himself, he has to have the heart to really commit himself to this team or to our team.” Guiao continued.
With a two-week break coming up for the Road Warriors, Guiao says that a decision needs to be made, whether or not they do end up replacing Moultrie for the rest of the conference.
“I think we have to make a decision. If the decision is to retain him, then I guess we'll have to retain him for the rest of the conference. If the decision is to change him, I guess we'll have to change him these next few days. Ganoon lang kasimple yun because if we're going to change him, we want to have a few days of practice to do the changing, sayang yung two weeks eh.”
“We'll try to make an early decision. If we don't make a decision the next few days, that means we're keeping him.“ Guiao said.
