Ricky Dandan blames lack of defense Dyip's blowout losses
ďThey must realize, our team must realize, we score our points off our defense. We cannot out-shoot anyone in this league without playing defense, without making stops, and that was very evident against Alaska, and today, parang replay lang.Ē - Columbian Head Coach Ricky Dandan

It’s been an up-and-down conference for Columbian Dyip so far.

Literally.

In six games so far in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Conference, Columbian has alternated wins and losses for a 3-3 slate, with their latest loss coming against the Magnolia Hotshots, 126-101 Wednesday evening at the Araneta Coliseum.

It was their second blowout loss in their last three matches, and for Dyip Head Coach Ricky Dandan, their lack of defensive intensity was solely to blame.

“That’s mostly because of our defense. Again, we weren’t able to execute our defensive plan, it looked like we did not have a defensive plan at all,” Dandan said, postgame.

Dandan pointed out that to be able to score, Columbian relies on their defense, and without getting stops, they won’t be able to score.

“It’s all because of our defense, our defense feeds our offense, everytime we are able to make stops and we are aggressive defensively and we’re not missing assignments, we transform that into points for ourselves, but that did not happen again, this is exactly like our Alaska game.”

Against the Alaska Aces back in May 4, also at the Big Dome, Columbian got off to a slow start and ended up losing, 134-103.

“They must realize, our team must realize, we score our points off our defense. We cannot out-shoot anyone in this league without playing defense, without making stops, and that was very evident against Alaska, and today, parang replay lang.”  Dandan added.

The Columbian won’t be seeing action until June 1 against Talk N’ Text at the Mall of Asia Arena, and Dandan says that the focus on the extended break will be on improving defensively.

“This break is heaven-sent, we will be able to regroup, that’s what we’re going to do. I need to be able to shift their mindset to a better defensive mindset…We have to shift our mindset, that we won’t be able to outscore anyone or get a chance against the powerhouse teams if we cannot make stops.”

It won’t even be about preparing for Talk N’ Text or the next teams on the schedule. Dandan reiterated that it’s all about defense.

“My mind will not be on who we’re playing next, my mind is going to be on how we’re going to regroup and how we’re going to change their mindset into a more defensive mindset. We have a cluster of three games in ten days, Talk N’ Text, San Miguel, and Phoenix. I’m not gonna think about those teams yet. I’m just going to work on our team and how we can get better during this break.” Dandan said.
