Ryan Reyes turned in his best game of the conference just when TNT was playing without an import
In the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, all eyes have been on San Miguel and how its adding Christian Standhardinger to the championship core of June Mar Fajardo, Alex Cabagnot, Chris Ross, and Arwind Santos.
Much attention has also been paid to Ginebra’s conference-opening slump or even Rain or Shine and Alaska’s surprising starts.
With that, it’s been easy to forget that another team with a stacked lineup is hiding in the shadows – TNT.
With new faces such as Jericho Cruz and Don Trollano joining fixtures Jayson Castro, RR Pogoy, and RR Garcia, it’s safe to say that the KaTropa has the deepest backcourt in the league.
And we’re not even mentioning league veteran Ryan Reyes at that.
The now 34-year-old gave us a timely reminder of just what he can do on Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Scoring a conference-best 18 points all from threes, he was a big part in TNT’s, parading an All-Filipino lineup, 120-101 dismantling of Blackwater. “We knew in practice that we weren’t gonna play with (axed import Jeremy Tyler) so each one of us had to step up. Coach let us know that once we go on the court, we just had to play hard and give our best,” he said.
That’s exactly what Reyes did as aside from his scoring contributions, he also had a hand in slowing down Mike DiGregorio, Roi Sumang, and even Mac Belo into a combined 9-for-30 shooting clip.
With that, he and the KaTropa have barged back into joint possession of the second spot – and right behind the league-leading Elasto Painters.
Reyes and sleeping giant TNT aren’t done just yet, though. “We’re almost there, almost there. We still have more work to do, of course, but we’re almost there,” he remarked.
