June Mar Fajardo got the lucky bounce on a last-second fadeaway in regulation to force extra time while Arwind Santos scored his usual clutch triple in overtime as San Miguel won back-to-back games for the first time this conference.
The hype was around Renaldo Balkman vs. Justin Brownlee but locals stole the show in the highly-anticipated San Miguel-Ginebra clash.
MVPs June Mar Fajardo and Arwind Santos were crucial for Beermen late as the defending champions outlasted Ginebra in an overtime classic, 104-97, Sunday at the MOA Arena in the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup.
Fajardo got the lucky bounce on a last-second fadeaway in regulation to force extra time while Santos scored his usual clutch triple in overtime as San Miguel won back-to-back games for the first time this conference.
After a 0-3 start, the Beermen are now 2-3 in the standings. The Gin Kings meanwhile, just got buried even deeper and now hold a 1-5 card.
"We know from the start that this will be an exciting game, because both of us, at 1-3 and 1-4, are struggling this conference, and this game is very important. Fortunately we're able to get this win, and I think it could be a good morale-booster for us going to the next game namin," head coach Leo Austria said.
"At 2-3, I think there's a possibility that we can make it to the next round. I'm happy to see the players step up. This is the game, what we're waiting for sa mga players. I'm happy for them. Nabago ang chemistry namin, players accepted yung off the bench, some limited playing time. They're playing as a team both offense and defense," he added.
San Miguel was in trouble in regulation as Joe Devance's clutch triple pushed Ginebra up, 92-91.
Sol Mercado then split his free throws later, giving the Gin Kings a two-point lead.
However, that split also gave the Beermen a chance and June Mar Fajardo capitalized. Taking the inbound pass, Fajardo went for the fadeaway agaist Greg Slaughter and got the friendly shooter's bounce, forcing a 93-all count.
Ginebra failed to answer on the other end.
