Quarterfinals-bound Rain or Shine unleashed a blistering scoring spree in the fourth quarter to show Blackwater the exit door in the playoff race.
Rain or Shine knocked the lackluster Blackwater out of the playoff race with a scorching scoring spurt in the first seven minutes of the last quarter before cruising to a 104–94 win Friday in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Big Dome.
Chris Tiu nailed three triples in the Elasto Painters' 25-6 blitz in the payoff period to erase an eight-point deficit after three quarters as Rain or Shine captured its fourth straight win and moved up to solo lead with a 7-1 win-loss record.
Raymond Almazan had a career night as the big man dropped a personal-best 26 points, 21 in the first half alone, on 11-of-19 field goal shooting and plucked 12 rebounds for Rain or Shine. Wide-bodied import Reginald Johnson bulldozed his way to scoring 17 markers and grabbing 20 boards while Tiu and Maverick Ahanmisi finished with 17 apiece.
The Elite lost import Henry Walker, who played only seven minutes, to a shoulder injury in the first quarter.
“First of all credit to Blackwater. Their import’s injured, their locals stepped up today to really give us a hard time,” said Elasto Painters coach Caloy Garcia.
Blackwater held an 80-72 lead heading into the fourth period but were unable to sustain its hold of the driver’s seat with the Elasto Painters rallying from behind with crisp shooting led by Tiu. Rain or Shine opened a 97-86 lead with 5:13 left in the game off a Mark Borboran floater.
“The nice thing today was we played good defense sa fourth quarter and Chris started hitting his shots,” added Garcia, whose wards outscored Blackwater in the last 12 minutes, 32-14.
The Elite dropped to 1-8 slate.
Allein Maliksi had 23 points and secen boards while Nard Pinto and JP Erram, who had an injury scare late in the second quarter after his right foot stepped on Johnson's foot, posted 16 and 10 points, respectively, for Blackwater. Walker finished with two points - a driving layup with just three ticks left in the opening quarter.
