Meralco needed extra five minutes to shake off Phoenix.
Meralco dodged a bullet as Phoenix shooter Matthew Wright, who had the hot hands, missed on a jumper before Cliff Hodge sank the insurance foul shots to escape with a 103-100 win over a gritty Phoenix side Friday in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Big Dome.
The Bolts improved to 5-2 win-loss record.
“It’s a very important win for us because we are at the middle of the pack with Phoenix,” said Meralco coach Norman Black. “It pushed us a little further up and away from the bottom as we try to get to the playoffs.”
KG Canaleta dropped 30 points on 12-of-28 field goal shooting including six triples while Baser Amert had 19 markers for the Bolts, who survived the match despite a bad offensive game by import Arinze Onuaku.
Onuaku was limited to only 12 points but hauled 20 rebounds and tallied 10 assists. Chris Newsome got 11 points for Meralco.
Baser Amer drilled the go-ahead floater with 1:23 left in the overtime to give Meralco a 101-98 lead. Jeff Chan answered with a basket for the Fuel Masters to move within one.
Wright made good defensive stop at the post, forcing KG Canaleta to miss. Wright, who had eight points in the extension, missed on a stepback jumper at the top of the key and Phoenix sent Hodge at the line with 2.2 ticks left to seal the win.
“We had the chance to win in the regulation but we missed our free throws that could’ve put the game away,” said Black.
Amer broke an 87-87 deadlock with a stepback three-pointer with 25.4 seconds left in the fourth period. Wright lost the handle on the other side but Meralco squandered a chance to close out the game at regulation after Jared Dillinger bricked his two foul shots with 12 seconds remaining.
Wright made them pay by sinking the game-tying triple with five seconds left at regulation before blocking Chris Newsome’s jumper at the other end to force the extension.
The Fuel Masters dropped to 3-4 card.
Import Eugene Phelps had a double-double with 31 points and 26 rebounds, Wright finished with 28 markers and six assists while Jason Perkins chipped in 23 points and eight boards for Phoenix.
