After a 3-2 start to the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, a hopeful one in the downtrodden history of the franchise, Columbian suffered three straight setbacks.
And so, with their hopes for a second-ever playoff berth getting dimmer and dimmer, head coach Ricky Dandan had an urgent call for the Dyip. “Coach Ricky has been hard on us. He’s asking more from any individual, especially me,” American reinforcement John Fields told reporters on Saturday following their matchup with Phoenix at the Araneta Coliseum.
He then continued, “He’s saying, ‘John, I need more. I need more.’ We gave it to him tonight.”
Indeed, Fields gave Dandan and Columbian much more, pounding in a double-double of 29 points and 26 rebounds on top of six assists, a block, and a steal and powering them to a much-needed 115-107 win.
The locals were also right there with him as five of them were in double-digit scoring. “Everybody was big tonight. Everybody was giving big minutes and I’m happy to get back in the playoff picture,” their import said.
With the big win, the Dyip arrested their three-game skid and advanced to the seventh spot. “This is a big win for us because this puts us in a better position for a playoff berth. I hear (the magic number for the playoffs) is six (wins),” Dandan shared.
He then continued, “We’re at four and that’s a good position for us.”
While their remaining two assignments are not necessarily must-win, Fields said they will head into those with a do-or-die mentality. As he put it, “We’re taking it like we’re in the playoffs already. In the next game like Ginebra, it’s a playoff game. The last game in the GlobalPort is a playoff game,” he said.
He then continued, “We got to get to the playoffs.”
