Cliff Hodge and Meralco made sure to book their ticket to the next round before heading to showdowns with the conference's top three teams
Meralco is into the quarterfinals of the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The magic number for teams in the current conference is six wins and the Bolts emphatically earned that with a 102-75 demolition of Blackwater on Friday at the MOA Arena.
The resounding rout was only proof of how much the matchup meant to them. “I thought my guys played with a sense of urgency tonight. (This is a) must-win situation for us especially with the three games coming up in our schedule,” head coach Norman Black said.
He then continued, “We still play Alaska, we still play (TNT), and we still play Rain or Shine.”
The Aces are second, the KaTropa are tied for third, and the Elasto Painters are first in the standings – all ahead of Meralco.
With the Bolts yet to face those three top teams, they can, at least, rest assured that they have already checked off their primary objective. As Black put it, “It’s a win that helps us stay in the upper half and a win that puts us in the quarterfinals. Now, we just have to prepare (for) the heavyweights coming (up) in our schedule.”
And while the results of those matchups are yet to be determined, Black’s wards are nothing but confident they can continue climbing the leaderboard. “We’re definitely confident. We control our own destiny,” American reinforcement Arinze Onuaku said.
