PBA: Nash says Joshua Smith has become a liability

Having an import like Joshua Smith is supposed to be an advantage for TNT.

However, according to head coach Nash Racela, his hulking reinforcement has become sort of a liability for the KaTropa.

In TNT's crucial win over Meralco in the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup, Smith only played a shade under 20 minutes and scored six points on top of seven rebounds.

To be fair, Smith played sparingly in the second half after his nose got bloodied for taking an elbow to the face from Meralco import Arinze Onuaku.

There was no call.

And that's where Nash's issue comes from.

"I think at this point, it's becoming – the way I see it – it's becoming a weakness because he's not getting the fouls," Racela said.

"The calls he should be getting. I think that is something the referees should look at. He won't lose the ball if the referees are waiting for a lost possession, they won't get it because Josh is really too strong. If they hold on to his arm, even if he takes a shot, they should call a foul as simple as that. I'm sure as we play more games and now that we bring it to their attention, they will be able to make their adjustments," he added.

Ideally, according to Racela, TNT is supposed to utilize Smith the same way San Miguel uses June Mar Fajardo in the All-Filipino.

And as we all know, that's a pretty effective strategy.

Naturally, all other PBA teams realize it as well and it's not stretch of the imagination to think that opponents will send the cavalry to stop Smith.

"I think at this point, si Josh we played almost all of the teams and I realized that at this point si Joshua Smith is the biggest player in the tournament right now," Racela said.

"As a team, we would want to take advantage of that size, use that to our advantage like how San Miguel with June Mar in an All-Filipino tournament. When you have a big guy like that, you use that to your advantage," he added.
