"We've got to take it one game at a time, like I'm always saying."
It wasn't a good start for the San Miguel Beermen in the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup.
The defending champion began the conference with three straight losses, even with the help of highly-touted rookie Christian Standhardinger.
It didn't take long for the Beermen to find their stride however, as they've now won six of their last seven games, including Wednesday's 115-106 dispatching of Blackwater at the Mall of Asia Arena for a 6-4 standing.
More importantly, they've locked up a spot in the post-season, currently sitting at the fifth spot.
Just like import Renaldo Balkman promised.
After securing their first win against Phoenix back in the end of May, Balkman was positive about their chances of breaking into the playoffs.
Wednesday evening against Blackwater, the former NBA player and ABL champion finished with a quite 12 points and 8 rebounds in their first game back since their June 23rd win over NLEX.
Now, with one game left in the eliminations, the Beermen have a chance to improve their standing to fourth place.
Balkman says that while they've secured a spot in the postseason, the mentality remains the same.
"We've got to take it one game at a time, like I'm always saying." Balkman said after the win. "We got one more game to play against Magnolia on Saturday."
Against Blackwater, the Beermen found themselves down early, but ultimately clawed back and built a lead as big as 24 points.
Balkman added that they can't keep digging themselves out of holes.
"I mean, we got to find a way to be start stronger in the beginning,"
"But like I said, it's one game at a time and we pulled a win off tonight that we needed." Balkman continued.
Balkman and the Beermen close out the eliminations against Magnolia, as mentioned at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, July 7th.
