Alaska went through a stormy conference with issues that ultimately led to a loss of manpower.
Given the circumstances, Vic Manuel stepped up to fill in the void and help end the Aces’ two-year semifinals drought.
The big man showed the way for Alaska as he scattered 22 points in the Final Four spot-clinching 89-78 win over Magnolia on Tuesday at the Big Dome.
“Siyempre, masaya kasi after dalawang taon ata, ‘di kami naka-semis,” said Manuel, who shot 10-of-20 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds. “Sobrang saya kasi nakabalik na kami ngayon.”
Manuel continued to play consistent on both ends and with his performance, Alaska barely felt the absence of Calvin Abueva, who was on an indefinite suspension from the team, and the limited playing time of rookie Jeron Teng, who just recovered from a stabbing incident.
“Every game, talagang ready lang ako e,” he said. “Nagkaproblema nga kami sa nawala yung dalawang scorer namin. Talagang kino-continue ko lang yung mga ginagawa ko para ma-maintain ko yung laro ko.”
The Aces are now just waiting for their best-of-five semifinals -- their first since the 2016 Commissioner’s Cup -- opponent between the survivor of San Miguel and Talk ‘N Text.
And Manuel just hopes to remain healthy to continue delivering the needed production for Alaska.
“Siguro, kelangang alagaan ko lang yung sarili ko lang,” he said. “’Yun talaga naging problema ko sa mga nakaraang conference e kasi yung injury.”
