‘Pag sablay, sablay. Panget. Pero pagna-shoot, pogi. Ayun -- Jonathan Grey (FILE PHOTO)
Scaling an uphill battle against a twice-to-beat opponent, GlobalPort head coach Pido Jarencio had one special request from Jonathan Grey: make him proud.
And the shooter obliged.
Trailing by two points in the last seconds of the game, Grey drilled the game-winning corner pocket triple with 11 ticks left to rescue the Batang Pier’s campaign and extend the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals to a do-or-die in a 114-113 escape over Rain or Shine Tuesday at the Big Dome.
Though splitting his free throws a minute back and dishing out a pass that just led to a turnover for Sean Anthony, Grey never lost his confidence as he played the hero’s role – something that Jarenco asked of him before the game.
“Sabi niya sa akin bago mag-start sabi nya parang, ‘Jo, pakitaan mo naman ako. Bigay mo naman sa akin to,’ said Grey, who wrapped up his night with 22 points on 7-of-14 field goals including three triples.
Ibang klase.”
Grey split his charities with 1:11 left that with Batang Pier down 111-112. Grey then made a pass on Anthony, who drove hard to the basket onlyu to step out of bounds on the baseline with 17 ticks left.
Fortunately, Maverick Ahanmisi went 1-of-2 on the line in the Elasto Painter’s possession.
Then Grey made his move.
Grey nailed the go-ahead triple despite being smothered by Ed Daquioag’s defense.
‘Pag sablay, sablay. Panget. Pero pagna-shoot, pogi. Ayun,” said Grey.
And he just made Jarencio proud.
“Naka-chamba lang yan,” Jarencio said laughing.
'Sige coach,' sabi niya. Kaya yung playing time nandon, at the same time nag-deliver,” Jarencio added.
The winner-take-all match is on Thursday.
