PBA: Balanced Beermen overwhelm Aces to start semis
Six players finish in double figures for San Miguel as the Beermen take an early 1-0 lead over Alaska in the Commissioner's Cup semifinals.

No Beeracle run this time?

San Miguel jumped on Alaska to start the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup semifinals, scoring a convincing 92-79 Game 1 win Saturday at the MOA Arena.

Meeting in the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 Philippine Cup Finals, the Beermen extended their playoff streak against the Aces to five games.

"This is the most important game, the first game," head coach Leo Austria said.

"As much as possible we want to win the first game to dictate some tempo or for them [Alaska] to think hard for their adjustment. But I know Alaska will do more because I think that's not their game so we're expecting some more from them," he added.

The Beermen pretty much controlled the game from the second quarter onwards as the reigning champs got a boost from the returning Christian Standhardinger who scored all nine of his points in the second period.

That allowed San Miguel to turn a one-point lead into an 11-point cushion at the break.

The Beermen extended that lead to 19 points in the second half and never looked back as their balance offense repeatedly kept the Aces at bay.

Six San Miguel players scored in double figures with June Mar Fajardo leading the way with 17. Alex Cabagnot dropped 15 points while import Renaldo Balkman added another 13 points.

It was the exact opposite for Alaska as Diamon Simpson and Vic Manuel were the only ones to crack double digits.

Simpson had 31 for the Aces and Manuel had 16 as his 11-game streak of scoring 20 or more points came to an end.

Game 2 of this series will be on Monday at the Big Dome.
