In a sudden turn of events, the Philippines will not send a basketball team to the 2018 Asian Games.

In a statement late Thursday night, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has decided to withraw from the Asiad in order "to allow our National Team and our organization to regroup."

Excatly one week ago, FIBA handed out its sanctions to the Philippines following the brawl against Australia in the World Cup qualifiers. 10 players were suspended. Head coach Chot Reyes was suspended as well.

In light of that, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, with Yeng Guiao coaching, were supposed to take over the TNT KaTropa as Philippine representatives in the Asian Games slated next month.

The PBA Board even had a meeting early Thursday to discuss the country's participation.

But in a surprise move, the SBP is withdrawing from the competition just a few hours later.
