PBA: Im embarrassed with our performance Cone
Im embarrassed with their performance. Theyre (San Miguel) too good for us -- Ginebra coach Tim Cone

Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone’s face was flustered as he walked in a fast pace towards the exit of the Big Dome.

Just a few minutes after another beat down at the hands of San Miguel Beermen, Cone was a picture of frustration late Wednesday night.

More than the Gin Kings’ 1-2 hole after three matches in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup best-of-seven Finals series, it was the way Ginebra surrendered the duel that was hard for Cone to swallow.

From a two-point deficit at the half, the Gin Kings found themselves on the wrong side of history after absorbing a 132-94 crushing from the Beermen.

“I’m embarrassed with their performance. They’re (San Miguel) too good for us,” Cone uttered as he hurriedly walked towards the arena’s exit.

It was indeed a frustrating loss.

The Gin Kings’ 38-point losing margin equaled the worst defeat in the PBA Finals.

It was SMB who suffered that first championship beating after the Beermen were flattened by Alaska, 61-99, in Game 6 of the 1998 All-Filipino Cup Finals. Ironically, Cone was the Aces' head coach that time.

Fast forward to 20 years later, the Beermen got their long-awaited redemption all at the expense of their sister-team.

It was a close match after the first 24 minutes of action with SMB holding a 53-51 lead.

Then came the second half.

The Beermen outscore the Gin Kings, 39-21, in the third quarter as SMB took a commanding 92-72 lead heading into the payoff period.

SMB then ballooned its lead to 132-92 after seldom-used Von Pessumal nailed a trey with 47 seconds remaining in the game.

Save for Aljon Mariano’s layup with 44 ticks left in the game, Ginebra might’ve fallen into a more embarrassing positon.
