PBA: Guiao gets his dream team for Asian Games
Rain or Shine makes the core of the lineup with James Yap, Chris Tiu, Gabe Norwood, Raymond Almazan, Beau Belga, and Maverick Ahanmisi.

Coach Yeng Guiao gets his wish.

The Philippine men's national team for the 2018 Asian Games will have a 14-man pool as announced by Guiao Sunday in a joint PBA-SBP press conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

Rain or Shine makes the core of the lineup with James Yap, Chris Tiu, Gabe Norwood, Raymond Almazan, Beau Belga, and Maverick Ahanmisi.

Also included in the team are players from Guiao's original wish list in Paul Lee, Stanley Pringle, JP Erram, and Christian Standhardinger. Other PBA veterans in the pool are Asi Taulava and Don Trollano.

Completing the 14-man lineup are Gilas cadets Kobe Paras and Ricci Rivero. Elasto Painters head coach Caloy Garcia will serve as Guiao's top assistant.

"Ahanmisi, Lee, Tiu, Norwood, Trollano, Almazan, Belga, Taulava, these guys are familiar with me and I'm familair with them. I don't see any problem working with Standhardinger or Poy Erram or sila Pringle, Ricci Rivero," Guiao said.

"James Yap and Asi Taulava were with me in the 2009 national team so I don't see any problem with that. Knowing there is a time constraint involved was also factored in the determination of the lineup," he added.

The Philippine team will start practicing Monday, August 6, and the final two cuts will be made on August 14. The national team's first game in the Asian Games will be on August 16.

Despite the rushed build up for the Asian Games, Guiao is determined as he takes on the challenge of making a splash in Indonesia.

In the end, it's for the country and the national team is more than willing to make that sacrifice.

"There's always pressure when we play and coach for the national team, there's always pressure. That was one of the considerations. Pero it's also sacrifce and it's also service to country," Guiao said.

"We do not mind that as long as we can make our countrymen who love basketball happy. We will represent the country to the best of our ability. Of course our objective is to make our countrymen proud. We will start working tomorrow," he added.
