The Death Star malfunctioned at the worst time possible and Ginebra found a new hope. Scottie Thompson is the new hope.
One close game changed the complexion of the entire 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals.
Less than a week ago, the Gin Kings were at the mercy of defending champion San Miguel Beer following a 38-point loss in Game 3.
Now though, Ginebra is one win away from the title after taking a wild 87-83 decision in Game 5.
How in the world did we come to this? A quick look back at Sunday's clash should refresh all of our memories as we prepare for a very important Game 6 on Wednesday.
Number of close games in this series.
The first four games of the Commissioner's Cup Finals were decided by at least 25 points and both Ginebra and San Miguel each had wins by at least 30 points under their belts.
But as the first tight game of the series, the Gin Kings were the more composed team and they now have a 3-2 lead to show for it.
Ginebra closed the game on a 9-0 run in the final 3:17 of the game to steal the win from the Beermen.
In that 9-0 run by the Gin Kings, Scottie Thompson scored six straight, including back-to-back lay-ups that gave Ginebra an 86-83 lead.
Not bad for Scottie who got dunked on by June Mar Fajardo with 3:17 to go for an 83-78 San Miguel lead.
Scottie finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Number of field goal attempts for Arwind Santos. He missed all of them, including an ill-advised 35-footer with nine seconds to go that could have tied the game.
Arwind scored two points and the vaunted San Miguel attack struggled as a whole with the Beermen shooting 37 percent from the field as a team.
Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross, each with a big game under their belt in these Finals, combined for eight points. Christian Standhardinger, easily the most consistent local for San Miguel, scored only three points in less than 10 minutes.
The Death Star malfunctioned at the worst time possible and Ginebra found a new hope.
Number of times Ginebra lost a Finals with a 3-2 lead according to chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III
The Gin Kings had a 3-2 lead in the 2009 Fiesta Conference but still ended up losing to... San Miguel Beer.
