It will be a reunion of sorts for the newest Phoenix Fuelmaster Calvin Abueva as he joins former coaches Louie Alas and Topex Robinson again.
Abueva, who spent all six years of his professional career with the Alaska Aces, was recently traded to Phoenix, Tuesday morning as first reported by Gerry Ramos of Spin.ph. He was traded in exchange of a 2019 first-round draft pick and guard Karl Dehesa.
On the same day, Abueva's former coach in the collegiate ranks in San Sebastian, former assistant coach in Alaska, and current Phoenix assistant coach, Topex Robinson expressed his excitement with the recent development.
"It's nice to work with him again after everything that he has been through. Ang sinabi lang naman niya sa akin eh, 'Coach, kilala mo ako.'
Robinson and Abueva have a history that go way back in NCAA. When Abueva built his brand as The Beast, he was under Robinson's tutelage. In a way, Robinson sees him as family that when he knew he is going to work with him again, he accepted him with open arms.
"Kakatawag nga lang niya, papunta daw siya kay Coach Louie, he just told me nga na nagpapasalamat," said the current Lyceum Pirates head coach moments before their game versus College of Saint Benilde.
The 30-year-old troubled forward went AWOL from Alaska due to personal reasons.
"Sobrang excited na siya, I asked him kung kundisyon ba sya, oo daw. Eh yung utak mo?," the youthful mentor said with a laugh.
"Calvin knows this, I'll always be a father to him. Kapag ang anak mo kasi umuwi sa bahay mo na may bagsak na grade, di mo naman iyan papa-adopt eh o hahanap ka ng mas matalinong anak. What you have to do is you develop that kid, yung anak mo na naliligaw and mahal mo parin."
Given the tumultuous background of the explosive player, Robinson assures that he, together with Alas, will try their best to utilize Abueva for Phoenix and in the process set his ways back to the right path.
"Sabi ko nga sa kanya, kalimutan na niya yung six years na nawala. What is important is meron ka pang opportunity mabalik at mabago yung life mo. Ang magagawa lang namin ni Coach Louie, aadvise-an lang namin. At the end of the day, ikaw pa rin gagawa ng future mo," he said.
"We are so grateful na rin naman sa Alaska for giving us this opprtunity na magkaroon kami ng Calvin Abueva."
