Ricci ready to fight for his Gilas slot in Asian Games
Rivero is ready to fight for his slot. If ever, the Asian Games will be Ricci's first official stint in the senior Gilas team.

Ricci Rivero is beating buzzers everywhere.

The high-flying UP Fighting Maroon made it just in time for court drills Monday for the first Asian Games practice of the Gilas Pilipinas made up by a reinforced Rain or Shine crew at the Meralco Gym.

Ricci had to rush from the airport to Ortigas to make it to training.

Rivero was coming from Serbia where his new UP squad finished off a two-week training camp in preparation for the upcoming UAAP season.

"Kasi we just got here from Serbia. Supposedly dapat mga 6:30 yung arrival namin pero di kami maka-land agad," Ricci said.

"Nakalabas kami ng plane siguro mga 7 something na, 7:15. Tapos from there, di ko na nga nakuha yung check-in luggage ko kasi nga nagmamadali talaga ako papunta dito so pinadala ko nalang sa teammate ko and then kukunin ko nalang sa kaniya after this training or tomorrow siguro. Pero yun nga, and then alam naman natin ang daan ng EDSA, ang cute cute ng EDSA. So na-traffic pa kami going here. Pero nagmessage rin naman ako sa mga coaches na baka ma-late ako kasi yun nga, kakarating lang namin," Rivero added.

Ricci didn't have time to rest once he got to Meralco as he went right to work with Gilas.

Following a team meeting, head coach Yeng Guiao immediately had his national team run plays in practice on top of the usual court drills.

Looks like Rivero impressed during the near two-hour session.

"Their potential is great," Guiao said of Ricci and fellow cadet Kobe Paras.

"Of course, yung kanilang experience and decision-making will have to improve a little bit and that's understandable because they're very young. But their potential, their upside is great. What they will need is to play a lot of competitive games. Hahasaan mo sila sa compeition dapat," he added.

At the moment, there are 14 players in the Asian Games pool. Only 12 will make it to Indonesia.

Rivero is ready to fight for his slot. If ever, the Asian Games will be Ricci's first official stint in the senior Gilas team.

"Syempre yun talaga yung unang iisipin ko," Rivero said.

"Pagka-rinig ko pa lang nung news, prayers na lang talaga," he added.
