Vic Manuel enjoyed his first matchup in a long time opposite good friend Calvin Abueva
Vic Manuel and Calvin Abueva were the pillars of Alaska’s contention in the last five years.
Now, however, only Manuel is standing with the Aces as Abueva was traded to Phoenix earlier in the month.
And interestingly, the good friends finally faced off as opponents on Wednesday.
While Abueva declined interviews as the Fuel Masters suffered their first setback, Manuel was nothing but cheerful in his chat with reporters post-game.
Asked about the matchup between good friends, he answered, “Siyempre, nakakatuwa siya kalaban. Parang yung laro namin kanina, parang practice lang namin dati.”
In a Facebook post earlier in the day, Manuel said that this was the first time the two were facing off since their rookie seasons in 2012.
Abueva’s original team was Alaska while Manuel was drafted by Air 21.
A year later, the latter was sent to the Aces and found a new partner-in-crime in the former.
That is exactly why, even though Abueva did his thing in trying to get under the skin of his opponents, Manuel knew better. “’Di naman niya ako maaasar. Kilalang-kilala ko yan. Yung mga ginagawa niya, alam na alam ko na,” he shared.
He then continued, “Focused lang ako sa laro. Hindi naman niya masisira yung laro ko basta-basta.”
In the end, Abueva made an impact all over with 18 points, nine rebounds, and two steals.
Conversely, Manuel wound up with only, for his standards, nine points and four rebounds. More importantly, however, the win was his.
