“Pag si Stanley and Sean nandoon, we have 40 points, easy.”
After a 104-98 loss to defending champions Barangay Ginebra in a 2018 PBA Governor’s Cup matchup, Wednesday, the NorthPort Batang Pier find themselves at 0-4.
It hasn’t been an easy out for the Batang Pier, having played their first three games without key players Stanley Pringle and Sean Anthony.
Pringle missed out on NorthPort’s first three games due to his participation with the Philippine Men’s National Basketball Team in the recently concluded Asian Games in Indonesia, while Anthony was also out for as many games recovering from a left calf injury.
Wednesday night, both Pringle and Anthony were back on the floor for NorthPort, and while it was still a loss, there was a marked improvement.
Having lost their first three games by an average of 25 points, a six-point loss to the defending champions is indeed a step in the right direction.
With Pringle and Anthony back, NorthPort head coach Pido Jarencio knows that he’s got a lot more to work with.
“Pag si Stanley and Sean nandoon, we have 40 points, easy.” said Jarencio.
They did combine for 43 points, with Pringle putting up 34 points, while Anthony had nine of his own, granted that the Fil-Canadian was still getting his groove back, and admittedly was not in top shape.
More than anything, Jarencio is happy to have his ace playmaker back running the show.
“Stanley makes the team better. Yun na yun. Kahit paano, naayos namin. Nakita namin na maganda yung takbo with Stanley.”
With a two-week break coming up because of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Jarencio has all the time he needs to fine-tune all that needs to be addressed before they get back to the floor on September 19th.
“More on defining everything. Defense, offense,” Jarencio said.
The rest period will also give Anthony time to get back in optimal shape for the rest of the conference.
“It’s a good break for us kasi makaka-recover, lalo si Sean Anthony and the rest of the players.”
