Barangay Ginebra returned in the win column at the expense of San Miguel Beer, 110-102, Sunday night in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Big Dome.
Aljon Mariano sparked the defending champion's telling run in the last five minutes of the ballgame to lead Ginebra to its fourth win in five games.
Mariano waxed-hot and equalled his career-high 20 points on a perfect 7-of-7 field goal shooting with seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block for the Gin Kings, who came off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Blackwater last Friday.
Justin Brownlee led Ginebra with 29 points and 19 rebounds while Joe Devance added 17.
Mariano scored six of the Gin Kings’ 14-4 spurt capped by a sweet finger roll to push Ginebra up, 99-88, with 2:54 left.
"Aljon stepped up big time. I mean huge defending, rebounding, running the break and finishing off on the fast break. He played really, really well," said Gin Kings coach Tim Cone.
The Beermen dropped to 2-2 mark.
Christian Standhardinger had 25 points and 11 boards, Arwind Santos had 22 markers and shot 6-of-9 from beyond the rainbow arc while Chris Ross had 18. Arizona Reid was limited to only 13 markers.
SMB erased an 83-74 deficit in the fourrth quarter with a 10-2 run move within one, 85-84, in a rally capped by back-to-back triples from Santos with 6:28 remaining.
