NLEX coach Yeng Guiao admitted that it was his coaching error that led to the offensive outburst of Ginebra.
NLEX Road Warriors head coach Yeng Guiao lamented his team's horrendous defensive perfomance in the third quarter of their loss against the Ginebra Gin Kings, which was ultimately the turning point of the match.
What was a one-point game at the half, 42-41 in favor of the Gin Kings, turned into a 17-point cushion after the next 12 minutes, with them scoring 41 points in the period alone.
Guiao admitted that it was his coaching error that led to the offensive outburst, when he tasked import Aaron Fuller to defend the almost unstoppable reinforcement Justin Brownlee.
"Our defense just broke down in the 3rd quarter and ano yun, it's basically my mistake. First 2 quarters we were defending well, even if we were not making our shots," the longtime mentor said after the game.
"We tried to experiment on it but obviously, it didn't work out. But it's on me and not on the players."
Standing currently at 6th place with a 4-3 slate, the team has bigger sights: a top-four spot, which means a twice-to-beat advantage in the first round of the Governors' Cup playoffs.
"Although maraming dikit-dikit sa taas, but the next few games will also determine who's going to fall by the wayside. That's why this the part of the conference where you have to be able to stand your ground in the crucial games."
He also pointed out NLEX' sub-par performance from beyond the arc, where they only converted 10/41 triples for a 24.4-percent shooting clip.
Regarding injured import Olu Ashaolu, who busted his knee in the early goings of the tournament, the Nigerian-Canadian center will get his knee checked on Monday, but is not sure whether he's fit to play in the most crucial stretch of the tourney.
"[B]aka it might not be practical anymore to bring him at that point. Where he has to start from zero sa practice yan, dahil hindi pa siya nakakapag-practice ngayon."
