"They're a great team you know. But honestly without June Mar, they're a regular team." - Phelps on San Miguel Beer

For the first time in franchise history, Phoenix is finally taking legitimate steps towards gaining true contender status in the PBA.

The Fuel Masters are currently 6-2 in the 2018 Governors' Cup and are in the running for a twice-to-beat edge in the playoffs.

Since acquiring Calvin Abueva from Alaska and super import Eugene Phelps doing El Destructor things, Phoenix has played remarkably well and is poised to make nice playoff run in the season-ending joust.

The Fuel Masters will have San Miguel up next and a win over the Beermen should solidify the team's claim as a true contender for the title.

As the undisputed alpha team over the last three or so season, the Beermen have looked anything but this conference.

San Miguel is on a rare three-game slide and the Beermen will enter their game against Phoenix with a 2-4 record.

They are still missing reigning four-time MVP June Mar Fajardo due to injury.

That little development adds to the already growing confidence of Phoenix heading to the crucial game set Friday.

"They're a great team you know," Phelps said of the Beermen after he scored 51 points Wednesday in a Phoenix win over NLEX.

"But honestly without June Mar, they're a regular team. I mean, we just gotta play our game and I think we'll be fine," he added.

It's still about two days whether or not Phelps will end up regretting his words but Phoenix's great play has been undeniable this conference.

After several disappointments, it seems that the Fuel Masters have finally turned the corner.

"I think it's maturity," Phelps said of Phoenix's improvement.

"We just keep playing as a team. It's not just me, there's Calvin [Abueva], Matt [Wright], we got Perk [Perkins] rookie of the year. So it's just a team effort you know, keep on working, keep on going and see where we go," he added.
