The match against the Elite, who currently sit at 6-3 and will have another game to go before the Fuel Masters, will decide which one between Phoenix and Blackwater will get a playoff bonus.
Phoenix's breakout conference continued Wednesday after beating Rain or Shine.
Coming back from 16 points down to stun the Elasto Painters in the fourth quarter, the Fuel Masters improved to 7-3 for the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup as they near a twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinals.
The win over ROS sets up Phoenix's regular season finale against Blackwater, a team that's also having a breakout performance in the Governors' Cup.
That match against the Elite, who currently sit at 6-3 and will have another game to go before the Fuel Masters, will decide which one between Phoenix and Blackwater will get a playoff bonus.
It's a crucial game for sure.
"It's a huge game for us. That's like our season on the line you know," Phoenix import Eugene Phelps said of the upcoming showdown against Blackwater on Nov. 4 at the Big Dome.
"If we lose that game, we drop. Obviously if we win, we get top-4 and we'll probably play them again," he added.
The first time El Destructor played for Phoenix, he led the franchise to its first playoff appearance in the 2016 Governors' Cup, starting a string of three straight quarterfinals appearances.
Since then however, Phoenix has missed the playoffs for three straight times.
Now that they've made it back, the Fuel Masters want a twice-to-beat advantage. Phoenix has never made it to the semifinals.
A win against Blackwater to secure a playoff bonus could help open up a lot of things for the young franchise.
"It's big for us, especially for a young franchise. I think this is our third year you know," Phelps said, knowing what's at stake.
"We'll just have to play our A-game," he added.
