PBA: Phoenix clinches no. 2 and twice-to-beat after surviving Blackwater

Phoenix clinched the no. 2 seed right behind two-time defending champion Brgy. Ginebra. It's the highest finish for the Fuel Masters in the elimination round in franchise history.

The Fuel Masters beat the Blackwater Elite Sunday in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup, taking a 97-91 win at the Big Dome.
The victory pushed the Fuel Masters to 8-3 and are officially off to the quarterfinals with a twice-to-beat advantage.
Phoenix likewise clinched the no. 2 seed right behind two-time defending champion Brgy. Ginebra. It's the highest finish for the Fuel Masters in the elimination round in franchise history.
"Actually Top 4 pa lang sa eliminations, ang gusto namin mag-Top 4, dito mismo sa tournament," head coach Louie Alas said.
"At least we're one foot away, one win away and we're just waiting sinong kalaban namin," he added.
Matthew Wright and Calvin Abueva both came through for the Fuel Masters in the fourth period, each scoing 10 points as Phoenix closed out Blackwater.
Wright landed the dagger as a fallaway jumper over the defense of Paul Zamar gave Phoenix a 95-89 lead with 42 seconds left. Abueva finished things off from the foul line to seal the final tally.
Abueva led the way with 25 points and eight rebounds while Wright added 23 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Import Eugene Phelps was good for 16 points, 19 boards, and five assists for Phoenix.
The Elite got 21 from import Henry Walker. Blackwater's loss put them at 7-4 for 5th place and they will meet Magnolia in the quarterfinals.
