"We always believe it and now I'm glad that we can finally show everybody that we are a contender. We're not just thinking playoffs, we're thiking Finals, we're thinking of championships. We're a lot more than an expansion, a new independent team," --- Matthew Wright.
Sunday marked a couple of team milestones for Phoenix in the PBA.
After beating Blackwater in the 2018 Governors' Cup, the Fuel Masters clinched the no. 2 seed for the playoffs. It's the highest regular-season finish for the team in franchise history.
As the no. 2 seed, Phoenix also has a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals, another first for them.
However, that's not quite enough for the Fuel Masters.
"It's nice to finish in second because you get the twice-to-beat, but that doesn't mean anything," guard Matthew Wright said.
"The playoffs are about to start and it's an entirely new season so all we gotta focus on is that twice-to-beat and we just gotta beat whoever it is and use that advantage going forward to hopefully the semis and whatever happens there," he added.
It's not the first time for Phoenix to make the playoffs though it's the first time for the Fuel Masters to advance this season after tough campains in the Philippine Cup and the Commissioner's Cup.
And as one of the younger teams in the league, finishing this high in the elimination round is kind of a big deal.
With key pieces in place in multiple positions plus a great import and a veteran coach, the Fuel Masters are ready to take that next step towards becoming a true PBA contender.
"It's satisfying knowing that we're a young team. You know, like the future is bright for Phoenix," Wright said.
"We always believe it and now I'm glad that we can finally show everybody that we are a contender. We're not just thinking playoffs, we're thiking Finals, we're thinking of championships. We're a lot more than an expansion, a new independent team," he added.
