Temporarily replacing the suspended Chot Reyes in the Asian Games and the last FIBA window, Guiao takes over Gilas for real following an official announcement Tuesday.
Now it's official.
Yeng Guiao will coach Gilas Pilipinas moving forward, or at least until the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.
Temporarily replacing the suspended Chot Reyes in the Asian Games and the last FIBA window, Guiao takes over for real following an official announcement Tuesday.
Guiao, who first coached the national team back in 2009, led Gilas to a 5th-place finish in the Asian Games and a 1-1 split in the fourth Asian Qualifiers window.
And with Reyes giving up contro of the national team for good, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has decided to hand the program over the Guiao full time.
"The formal appointment came out this morning, before the [Board] meeting," Guiao said.
"He [SBP President Al Panlilio] was the signatory to my appointment. It's no longer interim and temporary. Hanggang sa World Cup na ano, at least until next year. It's formal now," he added.
Guiao didn't waste much time as official head coach of Gilas Pilipinas. Aside from naming his new 20-man pool, coach Yeng revealed that the national team will play four practice games before Nov. 30.
Gilas will go up against Jordan on Nov. 19 and 21. The Philippines will also play Lebanon on Nov. 23 and 25.
After that, Gilas will host Kazakhstan on Nov. 30 and Iran on Dec. 3 both at the MOA Arena.
"Pupunta dito yung Jordan and Lebanon," Guiao said.
"Good for us kasi we don't have to spend money to go abroad. We have four tuneup games before Nov. 30 so medyo maganda naman yung preparation natin," he added.
