PBA: Red-hot Meralco force sudden death vs. Phoenix
Buried to a 1-6 record following a six-game slide, Meralco has now won five straight and are on the verge of making another semis trip in the Governors' Cup.

Meralco escapes elimination again.

The Bolts continue their electrifying run in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup, beating no. 2 Phoenix, 90-74, in the quarterfinals Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrdome.

Erasing the Fuel Masters' twice-to-beat edge, the 7th-seeded Bolts have forced a sudden death with a semifinals slot on the line.

Buried to a 1-6 record following a six-game slide, Meralco has now won five straight and are on the verge of making another semis trip in the Governors' Cup.

Phoenix was actually ahead after a defensive struggle in the first half but the Bolts came out firing in the third period, scoring 33 points to turn the game in their favor.

"Tonight it's about our defense. In the first half we struggled because Phoenix is also a very good defensive team, their defense against Durham was really good in the first half," head coach Norman Black said.

"We just made a few adjustments and tried to take away their help defense and it worked for us," he added.

Durham, limited to only eight points in the first half, dropped 10 in the third to lead the Meralco offense.

The reigning two-time Best Import would finish with 18 in the second half for a total of 26 for the Bolts. He also grabbed 15 rebounds and had four assists and three blocks.

Chris Newsome and Baser Amer added 16 and 14 points respectively for Meralco.

For the Fuel Masters, only Eugene Phelps shot well from the field, dropping 27 points on 50 percent clip.

As a whole, Phoenix struggled on offense with Calvin Abueva the only other player in double figures. The Beast went for 18 points before fouling out in the fourth.

The Phoenix-Meralco sudden death is set for Friday at the Big Dome.
