Desiderio has made a name for himself with UP over the last couple of seasons and his draft stock certainly went up after leading the Maroons to an incredible run to the UAAP Season 81 Finals.
The first surprise of the 2018 PBA Draft didn't come via a blockbuster trade.
Well, sort of.
NLEX used the fourth overall pick, acquired from Phoenix a couple of days before, to select UP's Paul Desiderio.
In a shock move, the Road Warriors selected the former Fighting Maroons hero early. Many saw Desiderio as a late first-round selection.
"Gulat na gulat ako," Desiderio said after he took the stage with his new team.
Desiderio made a name for himself with UP over the last couple of seasons and his draft stock certainly went up after helping lead the Maroons to an incredible run to the UAAP Season 81 Finals.
UP broke a 32-year Finals drought and 21-year Final Four drought in Desiderio's final season for the Maroons.
Desiderio joins Kiefer Ravena and Kevin Alas with the Road Warriors, though the rookie will likely assume a prime role immediately, with Kiefer still serving suspension and Alas still recovering from an ACL injury.
