Javee Mocon proved his worth as one of the top prospects in the two-day Draft Combine, although he understands that it’s not for him to expect too much in the PBA Rookie Draft set Sunday at the Robinson’s Place in Ermita, Manila.
“Wala namang expectations, ang sa akin kasi ang importante is ma-draft, makuha ng team,” said the 6-foot-4 Mocon.
A member three-time NCAA champion with the San Beda Red Lions and named Finals MVP in the recent title series against the Lycem of the Philippines University Pirates, Mocon made a good account of himself in the Draft Combine.
Coaches and their respective assistants took notice of the performance of Mocon, who made it to the Mythical Team with former Sen Beda teammate Robert Bolick, Mike Calisaan of San Sebastian College, Mapua’s CJ Isit and Letran’s JP Calvo.
While he considers TNT KaTropa as his favorite team, with ex-pro Jimmy Alapag and current TNT skipper Jayson Castro the players he looks up to, Mocon said he is ready to play his best with the team that will draft him.
“Of course, I’ll be very happy if TNT selects me, but if not – if I end up with another team – that’s OK,” said Mocon, who had a chance play in scrimmages with Phoenix and Meralco. “I want to play for a team that’s going to give me an opportunity to play and show my skills, and help me improve my skills.”
For him, though, there is no question that he’ll bring the same intensity he displayed during his title runs with the San Beda Red Cubs and eventually with the Red Lions.
“I play with the same passion, the same energy. That’s how I play since I started playing basketball. That won’t change in the PBA,” said Mocon.
