Northport's backcourt just got a whole lot feistier with third overall pick Robert Bolick

From being a self-proclaimed “bench player,” Robert Bolick transformed himself into a killer playmaker for San Beda University.

Now, after winning a three-peat with the Red Lions, he is the third overall pick in the 2018 PBA Draft.

Of course, the always amiable guard was nothing but overjoyed to finally make his way into the professional ranks. “Ang saya. Sobrang saya,” he told reporters after Northport drafted him on Sunday at the Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila.

In the same light, Bolick acknowledged he’s already feeling the greater responsibility thrust upon him as a top three pick. “At the same time, gusto ko yung challenge na ‘to. Handang-handa na ako sa sarili ko at ang mindset ko lang talaga, kailangan kong magpakamatay para sa team na ‘to,” he said.

He then continued, “Ayaw na ayaw kong mawala tiwala nila.”

Heading into the rookie selection process, the assumed focus for the Batang Pier was to find a new tag team partner for main man Stanley Pringle.

Now, it looks like they have just that in a 6-foot-1 killer playmaker who averaged 16.8 points in 49.1 percent shooting, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in his last year for San Beda.

The even better news is that, for Bolick, all he is here to do is to complement Pringle. As he put it, “Gusto kong matuto sa kanya. Ibibigay ko lahat na hopefully, magkaayos kaming dalawa.”

He then continued, “Scorer siya, ako, hahanapin ko teammates ko. Gusto ko lang talagang ipakita sa kanilang winner ako at ‘di ako tumatanggap ng talo.”

The one-time King Lion better do that as he will now be under the guidance of fiery head coach Pido Jarencio. “Sabi niya, pag ‘di ako magpapakamatay sa team, papatayin niya ako,” the former answered after being asked what the latter told him on the stage.

Of course, coach Pido was just joking. “Masaya yun kasi makulit siya, makulit din ako. Magje-jel talaga kami,” Bolick furthered.
