PBA DRAFT: Shocker as JP Calvo drafted before Letran teammate Bong Quinto

Bong Quinto was the biggest dropper just as JP Calvo was the biggest riser in the 2018 PBA Draft
It was widely expected that Colegio de San Juan de Letran would have one first-round pick and another selection who would go later in the 2018 PBA Draft.
Of course, Bong Quinto, the Knights’ triple-double machine and team leader was assumed to be the first-rounder.
On the other hand, JP Calvo, their pint-sized playmaker, was thought to be a player whom teams could take a chance on in the latter rounds.
On Sunday at the Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila, however, it was Calvo who became the first-round pick and it was Quinto who became the selection who went later in the rookie selection process.
Without a doubt, it was a pleasant surprise to just about everybody that the pint-sized playmaker who only got on the radar during the Draft Combine was ultimately the 11th overall pick.
That goes for Calvo himself. “Nagulat talaga ako, pero sobrang saya kasi pagdating ko rito, kinakabahan ako na ‘di ko alam,” he told reporters after the event proper.
It was even more of a shock that in the second pick of the second round, Quinto was still available – and it was Meralco which finally secured his services.
Even though he didn’t go where he was expected to go, the triple-double machine wasn’t sweating it. As he put it, “Ang importante dun, na-draft ako. Yun naman ang goal e. Siyempre, ‘di naman natin hawak yung mga decision.”
In fact, Quinto believes where he eventually ended may very well be a blessing in disguise. “Maganda rin na nasa Meralco ako kasi kay coach Norman, marami akong matututunan sa kanya,” he said, referring to multi-titled mentor Norman Black who would be guiding him from here on out.
All in all, the Letran leaders were nothing but happy for one another. “Siyempre. Ang tagumpay ng kasama ko rito, tagumpay ko na rin,” Quinto said.
And not only for one another, actually. “Ang maganda rin dito, lahat ng Letran na nagpa-draft, nakuha,” he furthered.
Aside from Calvo and Quinto, former Knights Jeremiah Taladua and Chris Dela Pena also got drafted.
