Matt Salem (center) has a lot to be thankful for as he winds up with Ginebra.
Even though he wound up all the way down in the third round of the 2018 PBA Rookie Draft, Matt Salem says he has a lot to be thankful for.
First was because of the fact that he was drafted, and that he was picked by Ginebra, a team filled with veterans and a proven Triangle Offense to boot.
The sharpshooter, who played for the NU Bulldogs and the DLSU Green Archers, was picked dead last in the third round by the crowd darlings at 36th overall.
"Blessing in disguise. Everyone expected everyone to go at a certain pick. I don't believe them. It's up to God," the 6'3" forward said.
Since being drafted by the most popular franchise in the PBA curtails some higher form of scrutiny from their fan base, Salem hopes to start back to square one under the tutelage of the team's veterans.
The 25-year-old also added that he needs to work on a more consistent jump shot, and develop more weapons to his evolving style of play.
"I'm just going to work hard, work on my weaknesses that I have to get to what they have to play in their system. I'm just going to work hard, and that's what I promise. I'm not going to quit."
Joining a squad like Ginebra might not give Salem enough minutes to showcase his skills right away, but he sees this opportunity positively to expand his knowledge and feel for the game.
"I'm just going to learn from all the vets, honestly. I feel like my basketball IQ's just going to boom now because it's just amazing how many vets they have. Talking to those vets, studying what they do, this is a great opportunity for me to improve on my overall game."
Even though most questions he answered were about his future, he could not be giddier about the present.
"It's awesome. It's unbelievable. It's a blessing in disguise. I thank God for it. I'm speechless," shared Salem.
