ďIt makes the schedule busier, but Iím no stranger to working on so this wonít affect my time with Alab,Ē ó Jimmy Alapag.
Terrence Romeo was not the only new face introduced to the San Miguel Beermen over practice, Thursday.
The team also brought in Jimmy Alapag as a new assistant coach, and the Mighty Mouse was in for his first official day, completing a career turnaround.
As a player, Alapag starred as the franchise player of Talk ‘N Text, perhaps San Miguel’s chief rival for over a decade or so. Alapag’s jersey number 3 is retired by the KaTropa.
Fast forward to 2019 and Jimmy has since moved on to the San Miguel Group.
“I basically had conversations with boss Alfrancis [Chua] and boss Robert [Non] about coming over and helping this coming season. That conversation led to me being here today,” Alapag told ABS-CBN Sports on his move to the Beermen.
“I’m excited and thankful for the opportunity,” he added.
With Alapag coaching San Miguel-Alab Pilipinas in the ABL, it appeared that it was only a matter of time for him to jump over to one of the three SMC teams in the PBA.
But as for him actually landing in one of them, with the Beermen no less, coach Jimmy revealed that the development was only processed recently.
“I think that was always an option but it didn’t really come into a final thing until over the holidays,” he said.
“I spoke to the bosses and we talked about the possibility of me coming over to help [the Beermen],” Alapag added.
Alapag is expected to pull off a double duty with the new PBA season fast approaching and Alab’s title defense in the ABL currently ongoing.
“It makes the schedule busier, but I’m no stranger to working on so this won’t affect my time with Alab,” he said.
“My focus is still there [Alab] but the schedule works out kasi their practices are in the morning [Beermen] and then I shift to Alab in the afternoon. Looking forward to learning and helping this team win,” Alapag added.
