PBA: Playing for Ginebra both a curse and a blessing
“The idea of being a member of this group and that fan base overrules any inconveniences that we may have,” Cone said.

While it hasn’t been officially announced by the league just yet, it appears that Brgy. Ginebra is all set to open the PBA’s 44th season on Januray 13 at the Philippine Arena.

It’s rush time for the Gin Kings as they only started practicing Friday, January 4.

“Apparently, we are [playing on the opening]. That’s what we’ve been told,” head coach Tim Cone said.

“We were told we were gonna play on the 19th in Guam. The league tapped us to suddenly play in the opening game at the Philippine Arena,” he added.

Cone said that being in Ginebra makes them susceptible to things like that just because they’re the PBA’s most popular team.

Naturally, the league wants to maximize on a big even like the opening of the new season and the presence of Ginebra certainly allows the PBA to do just that.

“I told guys that’s the curse and blessing of being a member of Ginebra,” Cone said.

“You’re going to be asked to do things because of your popularity, your fan base, that other teams aren’t gonna be asked for,” he added.

Still, it’s those same fans that make things worth it says Cone even though they now have to two-a-day practices just to be as ready as they can be for the opening.

“The idea of being a member of this group and that fan base overrules any inconveniences that we may have,” Cone said.
