“Pag sinabi nilang best team at hihingin nila PBA, bibigay namin.” — Commissioner Willie Marcial.
New season, same commitment for the PBA.
The league maintains its support to the Philippine national team in 2019, promising to once again halt its operations to give way to Gilas Pilipinas’ international tournaments.
As of Tuesday, the national team has two sure windows in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers and the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
The last Asian Qualifiers window is set for February and the SEA Games in late November to early December.
The World Cup will be in late August to mid September and if the Philippines makes it, the PBA will stop for that as well.
“Meron tayong FIBA window. Feb. 14-26 wala na PBA para sa suporta sa national team,” Commissioner Willie Marcial said.
The Philippines will finish off its campaign in the Asian Qualifiers with two road games against Qatar and Kazakhstan next month.
With an even 5-5 record, Gilas is in two must-win situations to steal a spot in the World Cup in China.
“Pag pumasok tayo sa FIBA, titigil na naman tayo, so mga 10-12 days yun,” Marcial added.
As for the SEA Games, there’s still no concrete plans on sending PBA players but if the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas decides on sending an all-pro team, the PBA will oblige.
The Philippines will host the SEA Games and so it makes sense to send the best team possible to the biennial showcase.
“Nagparamdam na si Chairman (Ricky Vargas), kami naman kung ano gusto sinusuportahan namin siya at ang SBP,” Marcial said.
“Pag sinabi nilang best team at hihingin nila PBA, bibigay namin,” he added.
