PBA: Phoenix managing expectations for new season
Phoenix’s focus for now is to make the quarterfinals first and move on from there.

Coming from a franchise-best record in the Governors’ Cup, Phoenix is managing expectations for the new season.

The Fuel Masters finished 2018 with an 8-3 record and the no. 2 seed but for the 2019 Philippine Cup, they're keeping things rather tame.

Phoenix’s focus for now is to make the quarterfinals first and move on from there.

“Kahit dun muna kami sa mid pack,” head coach Louie Alas said.

“Then kung papasok kami sa quarterfinals, yun yung sinasabi natin na baka nakakuha na kami ng experience and kung mabibigyan ulit kami ng chance, I think hindi na naman kailangan palagpasin yan,” he added.

Even as the no. 2 seed from the 2018 Governors’ Cup just behind two-time champion Ginebra, Phoenix failed to advance.

The Fuel Masters lost their twice-to-beat advantage to no. 7 Meralco and missed out on their first ever playoff win and first-ever trip to the semifinals.

“Kung yung expectation mami-meet nila, wala na akong pwedeng gawing alibi,” Alas said.

“Sana healthy si Calvin [Abueva], healthy si Matthew [Wright], healthy si Alex [Mallari], sana healthy kami lahat. Sana magamit ko 'to,” he added.
