BOCAUE, Bulacan — Strong start and even stronger finish for the barangay.
Ginebra is the first to be on the board in the PBA’s 44th season after beating TNT KaTropa, 90-79, in the 2019 Philippine Cup Sunday at the Philippine Arena here.
The Gin Kings lost an early double-digit lead in the opening period as the KaTropa settled down and made it a game in the middle quarters.
Fortunately, Ginebra rediscovered its touch in the fourth to hold off TNT, taking its first victory of the new year in style.
Ginebra was pretty effective to start, slowly building a 24-10 lead in the first quarter.
The Gin Kings led by as many as 18 in the second, 44-26, before TNT finally woke up. With RR Pogoy and Don Trollano at the lead, the KaTropa were able to cut the deficit to seven entering the break.
TNT engaged Ginebra to a defensive third period as they continued to narrow the gap. However, the KaTropa only got it down to as close to two points but they never took the lead.
Come the fourth period, the Gin Kings pounded the ball down low to Greg Slaughter and Ginebra pulled away again to secure the win.
“It was good to go out there and get that win against Talk ‘N Text,” head coach Tim Cone said.
“By and large, it’s a long day, and we’re glad we got through it on the positive side,” he added.
Japeth Aguilar led Ginebra with 21 points followed by Slaughter with 15. Sol Mercado added 11 points while Most Improved Player Scottie Thompson was good for nine points and 10 rebounds.
