PBA: Cone’s Ginebra moves on to early clash against SMB
The Gin Kings will have the defending four-time champion Beermen next week in an early clash of the titans.

After a big opening-day win over TNT, Brgy. Ginebra sets its sights on making sure San Miguel Beer’s title defense will be off to a rough start.

The Gin Kings will have the defending four-time champion Beermen next week in an early clash of the titans.

For the mega showdown next Sunday, both Ginebra and San Miguel would have played only their second game of the new season.

That’s the perfect time to strike says Ginebra coach Tim Cone.

“If you’re gonna get them, now’s the time to get them when they’re still trying to figure themselves out,” Cone said.

For the All-Filipino, San Miguel will integrate two key pieces in Christian Standhardinger and Terrence Romeo.

However, the Beermen also still have the Fab Five of June Mar Fajardo, Arwind Santos, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Ross and Alex Cabagnot to lean back on just in case.

“But I don’t think they have much figuring out to do, I think they’re gona come out guns blazing,” Cone continued.

“They have an intact core, it wasn’t like Terrence and Christian came in and disturbed the core. The core is still very much they just added to it,” he added.

Brgy. Ginebra is certainly used to playing the Beermen late in the All-Filipino.

In the past two seasons, the Gin Kings met San Miguel in the Finals and the semifinals respectively, losing each time. An early look at the champs presents a new perspective for the barangay.

“It’s gonna be very intersting to watch, probably too interesting from my point of view,” Cone said.

“I would actually rather play them a few weeks from now when we’re in better shape, but it’s give and take. Take a little bit of their unfamiliarity and give up a little of [our] shape to play them,” he added.
