We’re bound to get better. We’re really trying to stay positive in this situation -- Yeng Guiao
Nothing seems to be working right for NLEX early in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup.
Two games into the season and the Road Warriors are already on a rough ride.
Costly turnovers down the final stretch did NLEX in, Sunday, as the Road Warriors bowed down to NorthPort, 90-95 at the Big Dome.
“We just turned the ball over too many times. We had 23 turnovers, three or four of them at the crucial part of the game. Tonight we did not survive our turnovers,” admitted head coach Yeng Guiao, whose squad's miscues turned into 24 points for NorthPort.
Trailing, 89-94, with 1:32 left, NLEX lost the handle thrice that allowed the Batang Pier to milk the clock and seal their second straight win.
It also didn’t help that Poy Erram got into foul trouble that made life easy for NorthPort big man Mo Tautuaa in the closing stretch.
“I felt na, Poy fouled out in this game and I thought that maybe two of those fouls should not have been called,” said Guiao. “It’s crucial for us because one reason we had problems in the match up. Di na makadepensa si Poy doon kay Tautuaa doon sa poste sa bandang huli. He was really looking out after his foul situation.”
Still, Guiao’s not losing hope.
“We’re bound to get better. We’re really trying to stay positive in this situation. We have another game on Wednesday. We’ll improve on our rebounding which was a really bad stat for us in our first game,” he said. “I think we were a little better in our execution off our plays but yun nga most of the game we we’re close but yun nga we committed those turnovers at the crucial part of the game.”
“We’re disappointed definitely, we were expecting more than a 0-2 start but I’m not losing hope,” Guiao added. “We have two more games this coming week, Wednesday and Sunday. If we can start winning again, I think all we need now is little time to regain our confidence.”
The Road Warriors will take on TNT Ka Tropa on Wednesday before facing off Columbian Dyip on Sunday.
