PBA: Defense still comes first for Poy Erram
“For me, number 1 option ko is to play defense talaga,” — JP Erram.

Poy Erram has transformed himself as one of the best offensive big men in the PBA, even extending his range as far as the three-point line.

Still, defense remains a priority for Erram and the newly-awarded PBA Press Corps Defensive Player of the Year is proving that he’s elite when it comes to rim protecting.

Erram has a combined 10 blocks for NLEX in back-to-back games, rejecting five shots against TNT before sending another five back Sunday in the win against Columbian.

He also scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out six assists.

Still, those five blocks take center stage for Poy.

“Ako naman, as a player ever since yun talaga yung goal ko eh, to play defense,” Erram said.

“For me, number 1 option ko is to play defense talaga,” he added.

As the Road Warriors lost a 31-point lead agains the Dyip in the fourth quarter, defense helped NLEX pull through.

“Sinasabi ko lang na just play defense eh, wag na namin isipin yung turnovers and offensive rebounds nila. Basta isipin namin, dumepensa kami at gawin namin ng maayos,” Erram said.

“Wag na kaming tentative, kasi pag tentative kami darating sa point na magi-isip ka kung mali ba to, tama ba to, instead na mag-react ka na lang, magi-isip ka pa baka pagalitan ako ni coach,” he added.

With NLEX sitting at 1-3 for the season, Erram says the room to improve comes on the defensive end for the Road Warriors.

It will be crucial for them to be sharp on that end of the court as they hope to start piling up wins.

“Sa practice, focus lang kami sa defense. Nabi-beat kami one-on-one eh,” he said.

“As a team kaya namin, one-on-one nahihirapan kami so kailangan namin i-improve yung one-on-one defense,” Erram added.
