NLEX sure had to work extra to pick up its first win of the year.

The Road Warriors survived a brave comeback from an upstart Columbian crew, holding on for a 107-97 victory in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the Big Dome.

Dominant from the start and leading by as many as 31 points but nearly lost all of it in the fourth quarter as the Dyip mounted a spirited rally.

Fortunately, the Road Warriors were able to settle down and recover in time as they pick up win no. 1 of the new season, improving a 1-3.

Columbian’s on-and-off year continued as the team dropped to 2-2.

“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” head coach Yeng Guiao said.

“We’ve had three disappointing losses before this, so this is a welcome relief, especially against Columbian which has been playing well the last few games,” he added.

NLEX started out hot, leading by 23 after the opening period, 39-16.

The Road Warriors stretched that to 31 in the second quarter, 65-34, before the Dyip responded big time to start the second half and make it a game.

Columbian outscored NLEX in the third, 36-17, to set up a thrilling finish.

Fortunately for the Road Warriors, JP Erram was steady and NLEX managed to hold on for the victory.

Erram scored eight of his 23 points in the fourth to lead NLEX. He also had 10 rebounds, six assists, and five blocks in the win.

Kenneth Ighalo added 19 points for the Road Warriors while Marion Magat stepped in for the injured JR Quinahan and fired 14 points on top of 13 rebounds.

For the Dyip, five players finished in double figures led by JR Reyes with 17. CJ Perez and Rashawn McCarthy added 16 apiece.
